ON THIS DATE IN THEIR OWN WORDS: NICHOLAS II – 1 MAY, 1918
From the 1918 diary of Nicholas II:
1 May. Tuesday. We were overjoyed by the letters received from Tobolsk; I got one from Tatiana. We read each other’s letters all morning. The weather was wonderful, warm. The guard was changed at noon, from the ranks of the same special frontier team – Russians and Latvians. The head – a presentable young man. Today they told us through Botkin that we are only allowed to walk one hour per day; and to the question why? The acting commandant replied “so that it is similar to a prisoner schedule”. Food arrived on time. They bought us a samovar – at least we won’t be dependent on the guards now. In the evening had four beziques during the game.
