From the memoir of Margaretta Eager (Romanov family nanny):

“We generally spent Christmas at Tsarskoe Selo. It is less elaborately observed than Easter in general, but at the Alexander Palace it was a great festival. There were no fewer than eight Christmas trees in various parts of the palace. The Empress decorated them all herself, and personally chose the presents for each member of her household, and for each officer, to the number of about five hundred. A tree was arrayed for the Cossacks in the riding-school. The children and I had a tree for ourselves. It was fixed into a musical-box which played the German Christmas hymn, and turned round and round. It was indeed a glittering object. All the presents were laid out on white covered tables, and the tree stood for several days an object of intense interest and admiration to the children. They were very sad when it was dismantled just before we went to St. Petersburg, but they were consoled by being allowed to help, and to divide the ornaments among the members of their own household.”

ROMANOV FAMILY: DANCING GRAND DUCHESSES

ROMANOV FAMILY:  DANCING GRAND DUCHESSES

Onscreen portrayals of the Romanov family often get many things wrong, but the one thing they do tend to get right is that the Romanov grand duchesses loved dancing. All four Romanov sisters regularly mentioned dancing in their diaries and letters.

Dmitri Malama, a wounded officer at Grand Duchess Tatiana’s infirmary (and a great favorite of Sister Tatiana Romanov),  gave her a little French bulldog puppy that she named “Ortipo.”

“Ortipo” was reportedly also the name of Malama’s favorite horse, so using this name was a tribute to Dmitri.

This funny little dog, which the entire Romanov family very much enjoyed, is mentioned frequently in their diaries and letters.

ROMANOV FAMILY: TOYS OF CHILDREN OF LAST TSAR

ROMANOV FAMILY: TOYS OF THE CHILDREN OF THE LAST TSAR

The Romanov family with Kaiser Wilhelm, first cousin of both Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra, who gifted these dolls to the little grand duchesses.

From the diary of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna:

“In the house where there are children, all the surroundings and everything that is going on around them will affect them. Even the smallest detail can have either a wonderful or a harmful effect. Even the nature around them can shape their future character. All the fine things seen by the children’s eyes are imprinted in their sensitive hearts “
