5 SEPTEMBER, 1915 – EMPEROR NICHOLAS II ASSUMED COMMAND OF THE RUSSIAN ARMY

Tsar Nicholas II arrived in Mogilev at the Imperial Headquarters.  His command to the army and navy from that day read:  

“On this date I assumed leadership of all land and sea armed forces located in the theater of military operations. With a firm faith in God’s grace and with unwavering confidence in ultimate victory we will fulfill our sacred duty to protect the Motherland to the end and not shame the Russian Nation. GRAND DUCHESSES MARIA AND ANASTASIA’S INFIRMARY

After the start of the First World War, “The Little Pair” – Grand Duchesses Maria and Anastasia  were still too young to be certified as “Sisters of Mercy” like their elder sisters Grand Duchesses Olga and Tatiana. However they too had their own infirmary located within a short distance of the Alexander Palace. The girls visited the patients at their infirmary daily: reading to them, helping them write letters, playing games, and generally trying to boost the morale of the wounded soldiers and officers. This was probably the first time the young grand duchesses faced the darker side of life – and death – as war time became their new reality. DIARY OF OLGA ROMANOV: KAYAKING 1913

 

Tsar Nicholas II as well as his daughters loved to boat and kayak. In the summer of 1913, Grand Duchess Olga recorded her father’s kayaking activities in her diary.

From 1913 diary entries of Grand Duchess Olga Romanov:

“Friday. 14 June. Did not go ashore. Papa kayaked, also after tea…”

“Saturday. 15 June. Did not go ashore in the morning. It was initially overcast but later became wonderfully sunny and warm. Papa kayaked. In the afternoon everyone went ashore, but I stayed on the yacht to my great joy…”

“Wednesday. 29 May. Did not do anything in the morning… Sailed in double boats, Papa kayaked. Then [we] smoked and picked lilies-of-the-valley on the little island…” Read more DIARY OF OLGA ROMANOV: KAYAKING 1913

“In the afternoon we went up the Dnepr. Ran around in the bushes…”

“Went up the Dnepr in a ferry. Later, Papa and I rowed, while Count Grabbe was behind wheel.”

“Went in motors across the Dnepr 4 with Papa and Mama and the Suite, and walked.”
