Anastasia wrote this letter to a friend, Katya Zborovsky, from captivity in Tsarskoe Selo.

“23 June, 1917. A.N.
My heartfelt thanks for the charming letter, which made me so happy. We too remember everything and constantly talk about it… Each of our days is very structured, therefore they pass rather quickly. Do you remember 24 August, on the “Dnepr”[?] and 11 July?! ROMANOV FAMILY LETTERS AND POSCARDS ARCHIVE VIDEO

Beneicke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University has been an invaluable source of primary material for my books. Nothing compares with looking at the original letters and postcards written by the members of the Romanov family themselves! Photographs do not do this experience justice of course, so the last time I was at Beinecke in early July, I decided to make a few videos so I can share a little of the experience with you.

Grand Duchess Elisabeth Feodorovna’s 1905 postcard

Rare Christmas postcard written by Grand Duchess Elisabeth to Elena Georgievna, Princess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (great-granddaughter of Tsar Paul I). Ella wrote the address in Russian because this postcard was going to a Russian destination (St Petersburg), but the actual message with the Christmas greetings and wishes for a peaceful 1905 was written in German. Ironically 1905 turned out to be anything but a peaceful for Ella (and for the rest of the Romanov family for that matter), starting with her husband’s, Grand Duke Sergei’s assassination just a few weeks later.
