ON THIS DATE IN THEIR OWN WORDS: GRAND DUKE DMITRI TO NICHOLAS II. 24 DECEMBER, 1914.
Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich to Nicholas II:
24th December, 1914. Petrograd
Uncle, my dear,
I want to write a couple of words to you. First, I send you best wishes for the holiday and the coming new year. May God give you all kinds of happiness. I wanted to show up by you, and even asked when I can arrive, but then it turned out to be impossible, and yesterday I was at my father’s where I found out that you are ill.
If your health allows me to come over at some point to Tsarskoe, I would be very happy.
The thing is that I would really like to see you and Aunt before my departure to Moscow. I have the approximate departure date on 26th December. But, if it would be convenient for you to summons me on that day or the next – I can easily postpone my departure for two-three days.
My health is fair, but cannot say that it is completely satisfactory. The doctors are laying big hopes on my stay in Moscow, or more exactly in “Usov”. They are exiling me there for about six weeks, after which I hope to be completely healthy and return to service.
Well, with this I embrace you tightly. Sincerely and deeply faithful to you
Dmitri
