Romanov family x-rays:  

In the winter of 1898 Dr H.H. Horne brought his X-Ray machine to the imperial palace in St Petersburg at the request of Tsar Nicholas II. Having heard about this cutting edge invention, the Tsar of Russia was curious to see and experience it in person.

Mrs Horne, who was also present during the photographic session, often liked to tell the story of how she accidentally bumped into Nicholas II after the X-Ray equipment overloaded the palace’s electrical system immersing them into complete darkness. (more…)

This ring belonged to Empress Alexandra Feodorovna. It was presented to her in 1914 by an officer from her own 5th Hussar  Alexandria Regiment.   The skull and bones  (Adam’s head) was the emblem of the regiment and symbol of immortality in pre-Revolutionary Russia. Based on photographic evidence, the Romanov family certainly had a favorite chair where they loved to pose. One can literally see the imperial children  grow up in these “chair” photos. “The Chair” was located in Empress Alexandra Feodorovna’s Mauve Boudoir, near the window. Grigory Yefimovich Rasputin is a magnetic specter in the drama that is Russian history, for the peasant mystic from Pokrovskoe played a defining role in the last days of the Romanov Dynasty. In 1905, the fateful meeting took place. Rasputin requested—and was granted— an audience with the Romanov family at Peterhof, where he presented them with a hand-painted wooden icon of Saint Simeon, a venerated Siberian saint dear to Rasputin’s own heart. He soon became a trusted advisor and confidante to Emperor Nicholas II and Tsaritsa Alexandra Feodorovna; Alexandra in particular was convinced that the “staretz” was a gift to her from God Almighty, sent to ease her passage through life as the “Little Mother of Russia,” and especially to preserve the precious life of her only son, the Heir, Tsesarevich Alexei Nikolaevich. The four Russian grand duchesses Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia, or OTMA as they often referred to themselves, loved and respected each other, as well as other members of their family: their mother, father and little brother, Tsesarevich Alexei. “We 7” is how every member of the close knit Romanov family referred to themselves collectively.
