ROMANOV FAMILY: BOOKS THEY LEFT BEHIND (EKATERINBURG)

As a librarian, of course this topic is of great interest to me: which books did the Romanov family bring into exile with them and what did they read during their dreary days of captivity? About 10 years ago, in 2005, I was very fortunate to have the chance to work with the Romanov family books directly – when I did an internship at the Rare Book Department of The Tsarskoe Selo Museum. Their collection consisted of numerous books, many of which had inscriptions of the Romanov family members in them. I will do another story on those later! This photograph has been commonly mislabeled (IMO) as Grand Duchesses Olga and Tatiana with their mother, Empress Alexandra. However, I believe that this is their Hessian aunt by marriage, Grand Duchess Eleanor, wife of Grand Duke Ernest of Hesse by Rhine – brother of Empress Alexandra. ROMANOV FAMILY: RARE PHOTOS – BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY’S VISIT ON THE STANDART.

On June 9, 1908,  King Edward VII became the first British monarch to visit Russia and his Romanov cousins.  Tsar Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra were Edward VII’s nephew and niece, and he met them and the entire Romanov family on the waters of the Bay of Reval (today Tallinn). The king and his wife, Queen Alexandra, joined the Romanov family onboard the Russian imperial yacht The Standart.

β€œIt is with feelings of the deepest satisfaction and pleasure that I welcome your Majesty and her Majesty the Queen to Russian waters. I trust that this meeting, while strengthening the many and strong ties which unite our Houses, will have the happy results of drawing our countries closer together, and of promoting and maintaining the peace of the world.”

The photographs below were also taken during the Cowes Regatta British royal visit on August 2nd of 1909. Read more ROMANOV FAMILY: RARE PHOTOS – BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY’S VISIT ON THE STANDART.
